A total of 1,98,655 birds belonging to 60 categories, including 1,20,676 migratory birds of 29 categories, visited two major water reservoirs, Hirakud and Rengali and some small water bodies in western Odisha in the 2015-16.
But the number of winged guests declined to 1,73,009 (of 57 categories) during the last year. The number include 1,20,676 foreign birds of 24 categories.
Forests and Environment Minister informed this in the State Assembly in response to a question of BJD MLA DrRaseswari Panigrahi and supplementary questions of many other MLAs. The Minister informed that bird census was not conducted at Ansupa sweet water lake this year as less numbers of birds visited it. A total of 9,24,000 birds visited Chilika lake this year. The Minister informed that 12 bird killing cases were registered and 22 poachers sent to jail for killing birds in Chilika this year.
