The Rambha police on Monday arrested Bideshi Mallick, boatman of the ill-fated vessel which capsized in the Chilika lake on Saturday killing four persons.
The police arrested him after he was discharged from the MKCG Medical College Hospital in Brahmapur after treatment for the injuries e sustained during the mishap. The boatman, who had been rescued by other local boatmen and admitted to the hospital here on the fateful day, was first detained before being arrested.
On Sunday, a case has been filed against him and Dutia Mallick, another boatman of the vessel, at the Rambha police station under Sections 280 and 304 of IPC.
Notably, four persons, including a baby boy, had drowned when the country-made boat carrying 29 passengers capsized in the lake in Ganjam district on Saturday when it was on its way to the Ghantasila hill from the Sabulia ghat through the lake and lost control and overturned midway after covering a distance of 2 km from the shore.
The boat was overloaded which led to the mishap. Besides, the boat had holes in it, owing to which water entered into it.
