Bhubaneswar: Brazen consumption of alcohol at public places in the capital city has been going unchecked by excise department and commissionerate police officials resulting in several incidents of crime.

Police sources said a number of people can be seen consuming liquor openly across the city in areas like Vani Vihar, Jaydev Vihar, Satya Nagar, Kharvel Nagar and even right outside liquor outlets. They go unpunished due to the glaringly lackadaisical attitude of excise department officials and commissionerate police, sources said.

Subhash Mohanty, a resident of Mancheswar, said he witnesses several drunkards sitting on roadsides and consuming alcohol every day.

“Sometimes, I have also seen people keeping liquor bottles in their cars and consuming alcohol openly,” he added.

Hari Patnaik, the head of a city based karate school whose female members had reportedly fought back some drunkards here recently, said groups of people assemble at various places in the city and consume alcohol opening with any fear of law enforcing authorities.

“These miscreants also indulge in anti-social activities after consuming alcohol and this needs to be checked,”

he added.

Ironically, Nayapalli police officials were also roughed up by some drunkards October 30 after they asked a group of miscreants to accompany them to the police station as they were consuming alcohol illegally at a roadside hotel.
