Bhubaneswar: The last rites of Congress leader Lalatendu Bidhayadhar Mohapatra a.k.a Lulu Mohapatra will be performed at Gada Rohanga near Brahmagiri in Puri district Tuesday.
The mortal remains of Mohapatra, who died Sunday evening at Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon, was brought to Bhubaneswar Monday evening.
A funeral procession will be taken out Tuesday morning, party sources said. His body will be taken to the Congress Bhawan and then to the Assembly following which it will be shifted to Gada Rodanga. Mohapatra, who was also suffering from liver cirrhosis, was on ventilator support, and he breathed his last due to multiple-organ failure. He was 52.
The Congress leader had represented Brahmagiri Assembly constituency for three consecutive terms –in 1995, 2000 and 2004. He was also the vice-president of Orissa Pradesh Congress Committee from 2004 to 2009.
Meanwhile, a pall of gloom descended over his native village even as hundreds of supporters accompanied Mahapatra’s body while it was being taken from Biju Patnaik International Airport to his Bhubaneswar residence.
Condolences also poured in for Mahapatra from various quarters. People affiliated to Congress, BJD and BJP paid rich tributes to the departed leader.
Governor SC Jamir, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik Speaker Niranjan Pujari condoled the death.
BJD leaders Sanjay Das Burma, Bikram Keshari Arukh, Debi Prasad Misha, Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena and several others paid tribute to the Congress leader. BJP state unit president Basant Panda and others also offered their last respects to Mohapatra.
AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi also expressed his condolences with the bereaved family of Mohapatra.
At a party meeting here, the state Congress has decided to observe a three-day morning for the departed soul.
