In order to provide an impetus to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of building a gas based economy, department of PNG is carrying out an ambitious projects linking eastern India to the country’s natural Gas grid through the 2619KM long Jagdalpur-Haldia & Bokaro–Dhamra natural gas pipeline. Out of the entire length, 762KM pipeline has been planned to be built through Odisha. The pipeline which will run through 13 districts in the state including Sundergarh and Jharsuguda will be built with an estimated expenditure of 4000 crs in Odisha. Apart from providing safe and eco-friendly cooking gas, the project will boost industrial and commercial activities in the state and create thousands of employment opportunities.
A city Gas Distribution project also forms part of the plan which will provide piped gas to cities in Odisha. Initially Bhubaneswar and Cuttack has been included in the project. Apart from Piped Natural Gas, CNG stations have also been planned to be set up to supply CNG fuel to Vehicles.
While these are welcome moves, there is a necessity to include more cities in the PNG network. In this regard sri Dilip Ray had met Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in Sept, 2016 and requested him to include Rourkela in the PNG project. As the gas pipeline is to go through Sundergarh, with little change of plan,it can be carried through Rourkela benefiting lakhs of people in the city. This assumes more importance as Rourkela has been declared as a Smart city. Besides Rourkela is an industrial city and industrial activities could be accelerated with a steady, secure and clean energy supply. With PNG to the city, and CNG stations in Rourkela , commercial, industrial and domestic needs could be addressed effectively in the city.
In the recently organized Urja Utsav, the PNG projects were launched by PNG Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan. As Rourkela didn’t figure in the PNG networked cities, So Sri Dilip Ray met him Yesterday in Delhi to reiterate his previous demand and include Rourkela in the Piped Gas Network which the people of Rourkela deserve given the smart city status of the city.
Shri Pradhan assured to Sri Dilip Ray to include Rourkela in the PNG network, and people of Rourkela will soon avail the benefits of piped Natural Gas and CNG stations in the city.
